Bristol Ladies Rugby has joined the family of sports clubs affiliated to Bristol Sport.
The addition of women’s premiership rugby sees the stable of sports companies managed by Bristol Sport grow to six clubs including Bristol Rugby; Bristol City; Bristol Academy Women’s Football Club; Bristol Flyers Basketball and DZ Racing.
Bristol Ladies Rugby chairwoman Heidi Mercer said “It is fantastic for us to become part of the Bristol Sport family.
“I believe this will help us to continue to grow. A few years ago we became affiliated with Bristol Rugby – that helped us really develop the women’s game in the region. We now have three World Cup winners and a squad of county, divisional and international players at both elite and U20 level.
I strongly feel that linking up with Bristol Sport will help take us to the next step. The commercial power that Bristol Sport can offer with its portfolio of clubs and the Ashton Gate Stadium is hugely exciting.”
Bristol Ladies currently have two senior teams, one in the Premiership and another in the Championship South. They train and play their home fixtures at The Portway Rugby Development Centre. Since becoming Bristol Ladies, (they were formerly Clifton Ladies), the first XV has consistently retained its Premiership place alongside some of the top clubs in the country, creating additional strength and success through the second XV.
CEO of Bristol Sport Andrew Billingham said “The addition of Ladies Rugby to our portfolio is really exciting. The momentum of three of their team being World Cup winners and three players becoming the first females to be awarded professional Sevens Rugby contracts by the Rugby Football Union is incredible.
“We look forward to working with Bristol Ladies to achieve their commercial aims as their 2014/15 season kicks off.”
Bristol Ladies play their first home game at the Portway Rugby Development Centre on Sunday 21st September KO 14:45hrs against Saracens Ladies. All home matches are free to watch – so bring all the family and cheer on this world class team!
