In round 7 of the RFU Women’s Premiership games Lichfield Ladies travelled to Wasps in London and continued their winning streak with a last gasp try to snatch victory from the home side.

Wasps started the game strongly, putting immediate pressure on Lichfield and took the lead with a penalty on 3 minutes from the impressive inside centre Hannah Edwards. It was Lichfield who dominated early in both the scrum and the lineout, but Wasps increased their lead on 12 minutes with a try from full back Tess Gardner.

Lichfield then enjoyed a spell of excellent possession, reducing their handling errors and going close on several occasions. They eventually scored, when after a free flowing move, second row Stacey Maguire picked the ball up on the left wing and crashed over for a try in the corner to bring the score to 8-5.

Throughout the first half Lichfield  flanker Katie Turnbull and prop Catt Pugh caused Wasps problems with superb driving play through the middle, but Lichfield failed to score as Wasps defence held firm, helped by some superb kicking from Hannah Edwards. Lichfield drew level after 28 minutes when Sarah Nicholas slotted home a penalty from 25 metres to leave the half time score at 8-8.

Playing with the wind in the second half, Lichfield upped the pace and intensity of the game but were thwarted by dogged defence from Wasps. After several injury replacements, both sides were forced to reorganise and Wasps scored two tries through excellent forward play on 58 and 65 minutes, both from No.8 Laura Quinn, to give them an 18 – 8 lead.

But Lichfield refused to be beaten and after several scintillating runs from winger Jasmine Coyne and line breaks from Amy Cokayne, they eventually scored when fly half Tash Jones broke through and skilfully stretched to touch down on 70 minutes, with Sarah Nicholas adding the conversion to make it 18-15.

Then with Lichfield piling on the pressure and wasps scrambling in defence, with the very last play of the game, scrum half Jenny Maxwell ran at the Wasps defence, she was only half tackled and picked up the ball to run under the posts and score the final try, converted by Sarah Nicholas for the Lichfield win 22-18.

Commenting on the win, Lichfield’s Head Coach Rich Bennett said “I was delighted with our win today, we showed real guts, determination and spirit to turn the score around. When we were 10 points down with 12 minutes to go, I thought it was an uphill challenge, but we kept going for the full 80 minutes and got the reward we deserved right at the end”.

“This was a pulsating game and a fantastic advert for women’s rugby. Full credit to Wasps, great games need two good sides and they were excellent throughout the game”
