HARLEQUINS WOMEN BEGIN 21/22 SEASON WITH A WIN OVER LOUGHBOROUGH LIGHTNING

Harlequins Women’s 2021/22 Allianz Premier 15s season began with a convincing 50-15 victory over East Midlands side Loughborough Lightning at a warm Twickenham Stoop.

It took just four minutes for Quins to score their first five points of the afternoon. Captain Emily Scott flew through a gap in the Lightning defence to start her 50th appearance for Quins with a bang.

Just moments later wing Heather Cowell, who was also celebrating her 50th appearance in the Famous Quarters, joined the scoresheet as she stepped past her opposite number to fly over the line and increase Quins’ lead.

The visitors took control of the game midway through the first half and scored a well-deserved five points through Red Roses hooker Lark Davies.

Harlequins responded instantly with a strong driving maul of their own which allowed Amy Cokayne to power over, scoring her first points of the 21/22 campaign.

There was still time for one more score before the end of the half and it came from the visitors and their number eight Sarah Hunter. Once again Lightning used their driving maul to roll towards the try line and Hunter broke off the back, scoring in the corner. Half-time Harlequins Women 19 – 10 Loughborough Lightning.

After a few changes for the home side Quins found themselves adding to their lead shortly after the break. Heather Cowell raced 60 metres after lovely hands from the backs set the Quins wing away to score her second try of the afternoon.

It didn’t take long for Cowell to complete her outstanding hat-trick rounding off a special day for the winger. More free flowing rugby from the Quins backs allowed Cowell to fly over for her third try of the day.

Quins weren’t done yet. Impact player Ellie Green spotted a large gap in the visitor’s defence before launching a pass out wide to debutant Ellie Kildunne whose hard work was rewarded with her first score in the Famous Quarters. There was another debut try shortly after as Beth Blacklock powered her way over, joining Kildunne in scoring her first five points in South West London.

Both sides were still able to add one more try before the clock hit the red through Ellie Green and Amanda Swartz respectively.

Nikki O’Donnell blew the final whistle ending a strong display from the reigning Champions in front of a strong Harlequins contingent at a sunny Stoop.

Final score: Harlequins Women 50 – 15 Loughborough Lightning
