The prem season kicked off at Twyford Avenue with a London derby, as Wasps took on Saracens. Within minutes of the first whistle, winger Becca Rowe scored for Wasps Ladies, and a conversion from Hannah Edwards put the home side up 7-0.
Sarries winger, Emilie Bydwell, paced it round the outside to score moments later, but the try was not converted, 7-5 to Wasps.
Saracens continued to attack with pace and a further try was scored by captain, Maggie Alphonsi, 7-10.
Wasps retaliated with another (unconverted) try from Becca Rowe and a penalty from Edwards before halftime, putting the home side up 12-10 at half time.
The second half saw a continuation of the fast, dynamic rugby from both sides. Saracens made it over the try line twice, with scores from Lauren Cattell and another from Alphonsi, 12-22 to Saracens.
With just 2 minutes to play, Wasps worked hard in attack and their hard work in preseason paid off, with a try for Michaela Staniford out wide. Edwards converted, and ended the game Wasps 19 – Saracens 22.
Wasps 2s started their season well, putting more than 70 points on the board against Rosslyn Park. The 75-3 win reflects the hard work players have put in over the summer months and how well new players have settled into the squad.
This season sees Wasps Ladies enter its 30th year, which kicked off with a celebratory lunch hosted by the Wasps Legends before the game on the 13th. Keep following @waspsladies and facebook.com/waspsladies for more information.
