Valkyries Report

Worcester Valkyries fell to defeat in their first home game of the season as a powerful Bristol Ladies Rugby won 62-10 in the Tyrrell’s Premier 15s at Sixways on Saturday.

The visitors ran in ten tries with five for winger Lillian Stoeger in an emphatic win over a young Valkyries side.

Lucy Attwood also scooped a hat-trick with Cat McNaney and Caity Mattinson also finding the whitewash.

Valkyries’ Zoe Bennion crossed twice in the first-half but it was a convincing win for Bristol, with the result leaving Valkyries rooted to the foot of the table after the first two games of the season.

The hosts started on the front foot seeing plenty of possession and territory and benefited when Bennion crashed over from close-range.

However, Bristol reacted instantly with two scores, with the first coming from Attwood with a superb 35-metre run off the back of a lineout.

Stoeger added the second two minutes later after Bristol shipped the ball wide and the wing was the beneficiary exposing the Valkyries defence to score under the posts.

Worcester’s defence lapsed just minutes later as the hosts conceded two more well-worked Bristol tries.

McNaney sliced through the home defence on halfway to score before Stoeger was on the end of a neat Bristol move from deep in their own 22. Attwood converted to give the visitors a convincing lead.

Worcester hit back through a nicely-worked try from Bennion, who showed great strength to go over from five metres out leaving the Valkyries trailing 33-10 at the break.

Worcester began the second period as they did in the first, with plenty of possession, but failed to execute chances into points.

Cara Brincat showed why she is an exciting young prospect with a high tackle count and destructive running causing the Bristol defence problems.

Despite Worcester’s best efforts, slack defending allowed Stoeger in for her hat-trick after a poor 22-metre dropout and the winger eased in under the posts.

Attwood added her hat-trick after patient phase-play from the visitors which allowed the fly-half to dummy and touch down from close-range.

Worcester conceded three tries in the final six minutes as Bristol’s forwards crashed over a Valkyries ruck, turning over possession and shipping the ball wide for Stoeger to score in the corner.

The wing then scored her fifth try of the game courtesy of a quick penalty from Mattinson who selflessly offloaded the ball for the winger to score.

Mattinson then added a try of her own as Bristol mounted pressure on the Worcester tryline and the replacement scrum-half capitalised on slow defending as she dived over the ruck to score with the final play of the game.

Bristol Report

Bristol Ladies scored ten tries on their way to bagging their first win of the Tyrell’s Premier 15 campaign, away to Worcester Valkyries.

Five tries from winger Lillian Stoeger, a hat-trick for young fly-half Lucy Attwood and tries from both Cat McNaney and Cat Mattinson saw de Scossa’s side romp to a bonus point victory in emphatic fashion at Sixways Stadium.

Valkyries got on the board twice through inside-centre Zoe Bennion, but they couldn’t prevent slipping to a second league defeat in as many games at the hands of the Bristol Ladies.

What happened?

Worcester Valkyries had the quicker start of the two teams with centre Bennion bulldozing her way over the line after a swift backs move allowed the Valkyries deep in the Bristol half.

Bristol then responded through Lucy Attwood, whose mazing 35 metre run of the back of a line out led to her going over under the posts.

Lillian Stoeger got her first of five after the Bristol back-line identified an overlap and executed under pressure to send the winger over untouched.

With the wind in their sails, Bristol Ladies soon bagged their third, this time through speedster Cat McNaney who sliced through the Valkyries back line, she then rounded the full-back and won the race to the line.

Stoeger grabbed her second after brilliant hands down the short side, Tuima then rode the tackle of the last defender to offload to Steoger, who juggled the ball before getting her head down and scoring.

Attwood soon followed suit and got her second, she ghosted through the gaping hole in the Worcester defence five metres out to score.

Worcester reacted well and kept hold of the ball, patient phase play allowed from them to work their way five metres out where Bennion again bundled over from short range.

Bristol Ladies winger Stoeger bagged her hat-trick fifteen minutes into the second half, when she beautifully judged a shallow twenty-two metre drop out to collect the ball and run in to score.

Attwood secured her hat-trick soon after, a great line break from Amelia Buckland-Hurry and support from Abbie Parsons got Bristol 5 metres out before the fly-half powered over.

Stoeger grabbed a further two tries in as many minutes, both back of quick thinking. The first from a turnover where she was put away down the wing by Pheobe Murray and the second off the back of a quick tap penalty by Cat Mattinson.

Mattinson got in on the act in the final play of the game as the replacement scrum-half sniped over the line from short range to cap an impressive 10-62 victory.

Attentions for the Bristol Ladies now turns to another away fixture, this time against Firwood Waterloo Ladies on Saturday (2pm KO).

Key Moment

Cat McNaney’s impressive first half try was a real game changer as Bristol never looked back after the full-back’s hard running line and arcing run round her opposition number saw her go over under the posts.

Player of the Match

Lucy Attwood was impressive from fly-half scoring three times, but you can’t look past five star Lillian Stoeger bagging as many tries as she did, she was impressive and clinical finishing when it mattered most.
