ALDORA ITUNU’s power, skill and mobility, not to mention the ability to play on both sides of the scrum, has seen the prop as an almost automatic selection for the Black Ferns since her debut in the 2015 Super Series in Canada.

In 2017, the Ponsonby club player started in six of her seven appearances for the Black Ferns, including the Women’s Rugby World Cup final against England at tighthead. One of her career highlights came in the pool match against Canada, where she crossed for a hat-trick. It was a stark example of Itunu’s allround game. She was following in the footsteps of big sister Linda Itunu, who played 39 Tests for the Black Ferns from 2003-18.

In 2018, Aldora added two more tries to her tally against Australia during the Laurie O’Reilly Memorial Trophy series. Injury ruled her out of the 2019 Black Ferns’ programme.

Her first-class career began in 2012, when, out of the Ponsonby club, she first played for the Auckland Storm. At the end of the 2020 Farah Palmer Cup season, the Kelson Girls’ College old girl had amassed 46 games for the Storm and scored no less than 14 tries. In the 2020 Farah Palmer Cup, she alternated between loosehead, tighthead, and making her impact off the bench

That ability to play on either side of the scrum is an asset in any squad situation. Itunu has scored six tries in her 20 Tests.

Itunu broadened her rugby horizons earlier in her career with club stints in England and Italy.
